"Alef" is the first letter in the Hebrew alphabet.

The Ten Commandments, the Divine revelation to the Jewish people at Mount Sinai, begins with the letter "Alef", where G-d declares: "Anochi (I) am G-d your G-d who has taken you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage."

The numerical equivalent of the letter Aleph = 1 (one).
